Perhaps the most popular event in the calendar, Boardmasters is a combination of live music and surfing/skateboarding competitions held over two venues; Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay. The first two days of the event is a catalogue of International Surf Competitions held at Fistral beach, followed by Beach sessions afterwards boasting live music from Fistral beach bar and afterparties held in various bars across the town centre.
The Men’s Pro 5 Star WQS surf competition takes place here, where a skate ramp is built for the BMX and Skateboard competitions. Other sporting events include The Women’s Open, WSL Men’s Longboard, WSL Women’s Longboard, Boys/Girls Pro Junior and Under 12’s.
On Friday afternoon, thousands head over to Watergate Bay for the second half of the event. With an idyllic backdrop of the Atlantic ocean, this is arguably one of the most picturesque music venues in the world. Over the three days music performances run across ten stages; The Main Stage, Unleashed, The Point, The Land Of Saints, Corona Sunsets, The View, The Netloft, The Dockyard, Keg & Pasty and the VIP Bar/Stage. This years headliners include Florence and the Machine, Wu Tang Clan and The Foals. Boardmasters attracts approximately 150,00 people to the town, some local though of course the majority are young festival goers looking to enjoy their summer with a trip to the coast.
The town does get extremely busy, therefore if you are in the area at this time we would advise that you pre-book everything you possibly can. There is a great atmosphere around, and every year the festival becomes bigger and better. If you are not interested in the music, then we would recommend purchasing a day ticket just to go and explore some of the hundreds of shops, rides and eating venues across the site. Expect stalls selling the likes of Gourmet Mac & Cheese stalls, pizzas in cones, fresh donuts, salads, halloumi burgers, vegan only dishes as well as fine dining experiences in the Wild Oyster pop up restaurant (pre-book) to name a few, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to food.
The live performances cater for all tastes too, and no matter what genre you are into the selection is so wide you will find something you will like. Boardmasters really does take over the town with over 50,000 extra residents arriving for the weekend, so we do our best to advise all of our guests of this when they book. Please allow extra time for journeys and pre-book all tables etc, as from experience the festival does give the town a buzz, though every as you can imagine is extremely busy.
