Fishing and seafood go hand in hand in Newquay; there are not many places in the UK where fish can be caught in the afternoon; and end up in one of the towns seafood restaurants that evening. Luckily in Newquay that’s the norm.
Many travel to Newquay in hope of enjoying a fishing trip out at sea. Leaving from the Harbour everyday throughout the summer months, there are a number of different boatmen waiting to take you on an adventure along the Cornish Atlantic, whether you’re an experienced angler or have never attempted fishing before, there is something for all levels. Bootlegger Fishing Boat Trips offer mackerel fishing trips which are ideal for families looking to enjoy two hours out on the Atlantic in search of mackerel for supper. Bate and hire is included in the price, which is usually around £15 per person. There are also deep sea fishing trips (4 hours or 8 hours). Usual catch can range from pollack, ling, conger eel, squid, bass, mackerel, gurnard and wrasse.
Sightseeing tours are available too, and are perfect for taking in the picturesque backdrop as well as absorbing tales of Pirates and Smugglers that play a part in the towns history. There will even be chance to catch sight of one of the filming locations from the BBC drama Poldark. At £20 per person, this two hour tour is recommended as a way to see Newquay like you would have never seen it before.
While we are on the subject of fishing, we personally think that no trip to Newquay is complete without a taste of what this seaside town is all about; seafood.
There are an array of restaurants around that give you the opportunity to experience the finest seafood, such as the Boathouse Restaurant in Newquay Harbour. Here you can enjoy the evening out on the terrace with the Atlantic ocean lapping at your toes. Fruit de mere is a big deal, so if you cant decide on what to go with, this dish gives you lobster, crab, mussels and whatever daily catch is available; all in one.
Or why not stop by at lunch time and enjoy a crab sandwich whilst watching the fishing boats come into the harbour. Laid back and informal, this is the perfect place to unwind after a day out fishing, or for a nice meal in a perfect setting.
The Fish House at Fistral always comes high in recommendations, this restaurant offers fresh seafood cooked in an open kitchen, just a stones throw away from the beach. The food is rustic and authentic, using seasonal flavours and freshly caught seafood from the harbour. The Fish House is also open at lunch time in the summer months, so is ideal if you want to drop by for lunch after a morning at the beach, or if you prefer an evening visit to take in the sunset then this too is a great setting for a nice romantic meal.
Our new favourite place to visit is a little hideaway just outside of the town centre ‘The Fish Bar’. Opened in June 2018, this new seafood tapas bar is going places quickly and is a big hit with the locals as well as visitors. The owners are skippers, so they know a thing or two about seafood, and as you can imagine everything is freshly caught and brought into the restaurant the same day. The menu is exciting, and because tapas is designed to share; you really can get to enjoy the array of fresh cuisine in a way that you will not have tasted before.
There is a tapas menu, and also a specials board with more tapas dishes, as well as main meals. Patatas bravas is something that you need to try, and if your lucky enough to visit when the mackerel meatballs are on the specials board then we would recommend that you try them too. In fact everything is outstanding, so whatever you try will not disappoint.
The restaurant is modern and casual, with high tables and stools making the ambience laid back, energetic but still cosy. This is by far our number 1 recommendation to anyone who is looking to eat out in Newquay, and is perfect for casual meetings to sit and chat over tapas and drinks, or for couples looking for a nice evening out within a pleasant setting with great food. Children are also very welcome, and the team can adapt any of the dishes to taste.
